Unexpected Roadblock in West Cork Custom Postage Stamp

An unexpected Irish roadblock is caught here on a custom postage stamp.

Most of us are familiar with the frustration of a traffic jam, some of us more than others. This encounter was a bit out of the ordinary and not something that many city dwellers will have encountered.

While out on an excursion in West Cork in Ireland, we encountered this charming but defiant fellow. There was no way to drive around him on such a narrow road (locally referred to as a boreen), so we decided to play the waiting game and learn a bit of Irish patience.

After several minutes of slowly moving closer, an impasse developed and neither of us were prepared to give in. I got out of the car, grabbed this wonderful image and then encouraged him to move. When this effort ended in failure, I moved a bit closer.

This, of course, was the cue for all his numerous friends to join him and check out this strange person with an accent that was not quite what they were accustomed to hearing. Now having to face the whole gang raised my discomfort level a notch or two higher and, as I wasn’t accustomed to dealing with beasts of this nature, a slow and careful retreat was deemed to be the best course of action.

Upon my return to the car, the cows decided that victory was theirs, departed from the road and returned to the nearby field. This allowed us to carry on with our journey along this wonderful road snaking over the mountain and once again take in the breathtaking views that this part of Ireland has to offer.
