Love Stamps

Love stamps show you care. These modern US Postage Stamps continue a long tradition of sending secret messages to loved ones.

We communicate our most intense feelings; Love is first and foremost. From cave etchings to Shakespeare's Sonnets humans long for the emotion of love.

Literacy became more common, the cost of mailing a letter dropped, and there was a pretty good chance the mail would arrive safely and quickly. As formal postal services made the mail system accessible to more than just the rich, letters became a way to communicate love across any great distance.

The thrill of seeing that envelope when in a long distance relationship is often better than the letter itself. Naturally, smitten couples began to decorate or otherwise communicate their love on the outside of the envelope as well.

Stamps bearing designs with hearts, words or other designs expressing love are more modern in nature. I'm interested to identify the earliest examples from around the world so please post details on any early love designs you know of, the earlier the better!

A second communication method is implicit :

Some of the most striking stories are of covert communications to elude the notice of military mail inspectors. These inspectors were very conservative and read all outgoing and incoming mail to delete sensitive information in all communications.

Love Stamps have been regularly issued for decades by the US Postal Service. This one from 1973 is an early example of experimenting and definitely has that 70's look!

Wartime couples invented secret codes to communicate their feelings through the placement of stamps on the envelope. A stamp placed upside down at the upper left corner delivered the secret message, "I love you". Countless numbers of similar ciphers were probably only known to the two lovers communicating.

Modern day lovebirds in the US have it a bit easier with Love Stamps always on sale by the US Postal Service for use on envelopes, including forever stamps. What a great way to add a bit of your emotion to wedding invitations! But it doesn't have to be a special event - using them anytime can really make the recipients day.
